Verizon Powers Windows Live Call For Free
June 6, 2007
Microsoft will deliver its new VoIP-based Windows Live Call for Free service through Verizon Business. The service allows users in the US to place a one-click phone call to businesses listed in www.maps.live.com directory. See below search for “Verizon Wireless in New York”

Calls can be originated directly from you PC or by using a call back service (both options presented when you click “call for free”). The call back service prompts you to enter your phone number. The service then calls you first, and when you answer calls the business (a bit like the Jahjah VoIP service).
Calls are switched to the PSTN via Verizon Business’s SIP Gateway Service. Verizon debuted the service in May 2006, marketing it as wholesale VoIP.
Google has been offering a limited availability click to call service, integrated with Google Maps search, since November last year. The service uses a call back feature to connect calls with local and long distance calls paid by Google. There were some initial issues with prank calling that hopefully the Microsoft service has addressed. A quick sample search on Google Maps for Google’s head office in New York did not have the click to call feature enabled however.
