Mobile ad acquisition wars - AOL turns up the heat

May 16, 2007

aol-mobile-advertising.jpgIt seems like advertising is the big growth area seen by AOL these days.

Earlier today we heard of AOL acquiring AdTech AG, thus gaining an online advertisement platform that would be run independently of its other subsidiary Advertising.com

Now we learn that AOL/Advertising.com is acquiring the mobile advertising platform company Third Screen Media.

Mobile Advertising is indeed an enormous expansion area, expecting to become a US$4.7B market in the U.S. by 2011.  A number of vendors already have traction in this space including AdMob (see our coverage here) who are offering click-to-video advertising. Other prominent members in this space include ScreenTonic (acquired by Microsoft just over a week ago), DoubleClick (acquired by Google), TellMe (acquired by Microsoft) and more.

The big story here, then, is that the mobile advertisement wars have begun, and today AOL has cast its bid for presidency in the area.

The only thing left to wonder is how these companies will now channelize these massive investments.

I don’t understand these acquisitions. They are rumored to be about $100M. Nobody clicks on mobile ads.
