When unlimited is not unlimited
April 18, 2007

Canadian operator Aliant is the latest provider to announce “untimed” calling plans. The whole idea of the unlimited plans is to provide consumers plans that can be easily understood. Unfortunately Aliant’s plans don’t achieve this goal. Aliant’s plan provides unlimited calling to and from mobile and home phones, however from a consumers perspective it falls short because the plans are not simple. Try reading it and you’ll know what i mean, specifically the devil is in the detail:
1 - calls to non residential numbers are additional!
2 - calls to long distance numbers are additional
3 - $35 activation fee
4 - Early termination fees apply (contract length not specified)
Ideally you would also not be limited to Aliant’s network.
Perhaps the plan should be renamed the “unlimited calls between local Aliant home phones and Aliant mobiles in the same region for a small upfront fee in exchange for a contract”?
